Arthur, I fully endorse VirtualBox. There is nothing more gratifying than being able to mock up a complex network of virtual machines to test something before actually doing a real deployment. :) I typically use Debian for the real server deployments, but Ubuntu Server 11.04 is quite a joy to use and I run it on my own personal server.
