I am impressed and humbled by your effort to educate me. Thank you. I have
not had time to apply your analysis to my sons' PC yet, though I've
underlined pertinent passages; like, "IP addresses starting with 169 are
usually card assigned, which means the NIC couldn't find a DHCP server." I
will definitely use that as a starting point.

In the end I will figure this out. It just seems as though the amount of
knowledge required grows with each new problem...sort of like how auto
engines have become so complex that one cannot fix them without diagnostic
computers...and if the computer can't find the problem you're scrod.
