I'm not sure if this is still true.  I can't remember why at the moment, but
IIRC, putting an optical drive on the same channel as an HD no longer slows
the HD drive down.

Have you put another slower drive on the same channel as either of the two
drives? The channel only goes as fast as the slowest thing on it.
