Another free replacement option is Pegasus Mail.

It's not open source, but it's been around for about 15 years, and
AFAIC is the best e-mail client available. It's got a lot of good
safety features built into it. Mainly it does not run any sort of
scripts or activeX's and will not download images from the web, unless
you explicitly tell it to. Keeps you safe from all sorts of nasties.
