Yeah, I've got 10 Netgear FA311's in a cupboard at work, just in case... About ?10 each. And I agree, spending time troubleshooting NICs isn't worth it. If it did work and quite working, I replace it. If it hasn't been used and doesn't work I update the drivers and then replace it if that didn't work. It makes troubleshooting much easier. I've only had one in the last year that amounted to more than just the NIC going bad. It came down to bad NIC, bad patch cable and bad port on the hub. Apparently the cleaning crew had hit the patch cable with a vacuum cleaner or something - the outer shell was all ripped up! This must have caused a surge/short in the wiring which affected both ends. The rest of the hub is still working just that one port doesn't function. The good news is it prompted them to have me help them budget replacing the hub with faster switch! I keep a bunch of NICs on hand. I get the for about $5 a card now. I've had NIC's that don't work, but appear to be working ok according to the pc. I've no idea why, although I did hear somewhere that there is a power breaker on NIC's in case of a surge through the network cable. We had a series of cuts at work one night, repeatedly went on and off several times in 30 seconds. It blew one hub, and three network cards. Unfortunately, two of those were on servers, so having gone home at 5:30 that evening, I was back in at 7:30 till 2am fixing them. And I was in again at 9am the next day. What a hero :-) Anyway, according to the pc's, the cards were working properly, they just couldn't see the network. See, there was a point to all that :-) Jon -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com]On Behalf Of Steve Erbach Sent: 06 June 2005 13:19 To: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] LNE100TX problem Jon, That is what I had concluded. When I tell people that there's quite a bit of computer technology today that either works...or it doesn't, they kind of nod uncomprehendingly. I am a bit disappointed, though, that Windows XP should show that the NIC is "working properly." I suppose it's like a lamp, eh? It can be "working properly" but the bulb could be burnt out.
