I've got 3 APC UPS's on systems at work and at home and they have served me well. They look basically like a huge power strip/surge suppressor. About the size of a small shoebox with a cord on it. If nothing else at your house is getting damaged, I'd wonder about the power problem - maybe it's actually the phone line that's the conduit for the voltage spikes, so be sure you get one that has connections for that in addition to the electrical power.
