The only thing that I have heard bad about doing this is that the
battery contacts could oxidize.

Given that 89% of the time, the laptop is running off direct juice
rather than battery, should I remove the battery save only those few
occasions when I need it? Will the power still work from the wire if the
battery is absent?

I think that in the year I've owned this machine, I actually depended on
its battery for about an hour.
