Haven't done much in it, but not fond of the interface.

What I have done and used has worked well for me, once I figure out
where things are.

There is a project to take GIMP and give it the same/similar interface
to Photoshop. It's called Gimpshop http://plasticbugs.com/?p=241

I haven't used it, but it does seem interesting.
