Thank you Dan, Rocky and Martin.

I can see there is a bit of work ahead of me. Fortunately the arrangement is
still in initial mode so I have a little lead time.

If there is any other issues that you have ran across or potential problems
to manage please let me know.

Jim

Jim

I needed an IRS number as a foreign national to not be taxed in the USA. Its
called a Tax Payer Identification Number and is just for the use of the IRS.
I assume this is what you need. Youc an apply for one at a US Embassy if
they have an IRS desk there.

If oyu dont get one they with hold 30% of earnings,

Martin

Hi Jim,

I'm confident that a Federal ID No. would be something issued to you by (or
from) the US Federal government. As a Canadian citizen you wouldn't have a
social security number (SSN).

The university in the US that you're working with should be able to let you
know how to get a Federal ID No., if they can't get you one themselves.

Good Luck!
Dan

Hi All:

I have been asked to provide a certain documentation as to doing project
work through a US university. It is as follows: "...requires either a
federal ID # or social security number...".

As a Canadian citizen, I am not sure whether they are asking for Canadian or
US references and where and how this should be followed up.

I would like to know a bit of the lay-of-the-land before I proceed so any
help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

TIA
Jim
