As the old wag said, "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a
nail." In our case, the hammer is SQL. But some very large companies have
decided that for their needs, the overhead of SQL is overkill. These
companies include some big names like Facebook and Adobe and several
lesser-known but big players (i.e. multiple terabytes and even petabytes of
structurally simple data). Facebook replaced MySQL with a system developed
in-house called Cassandra, which can write 500 GB of data in 0.12
milliseconds, more than 2500 times faster than MySQL.
