[dba-Tech] Junk in the Registry

I've been using 'Wise Registry Cleaner' for about a year now. They have
free version - it distinguishes between what it feels safe to delete and not
safe. There is a free version - and it can be opened, run, and closed with
one click. I set this to run daily on my PC using a scheduled task.

'Best of luck' an appropriate closing. :)

What I'm seeing in the *.com web site lists is a lot of places I didn't go
to and don't want in my registry. But, as you say, if it ain't broke...

Hi Rocky,
There's tons of registry cleaners on the web. Beware! Many of them can cause
problems by being overly aggressive in their cleaning.

IMO it really isn't necessary to clean the registry unless you are having
problems.

A safe registry cleaner is CCleaner. It may not appear to clean everything
if you run it in comparison to other registry cleaners but it is safe for
non-registry gurus to use and those others more than likely aren't. It's
free and doesn't include adware, although it may include Yahoo toolbar with
Ccleaner quick links on it in the setup so uncheck that option when
installing (unless you want it).

If I run into problems where I think registry cleaning (after an infection
has been cleaned or something equally as traumatic) I then also run a
registry defragger when completely finished with all other remediation
processes. I find that Auslogics' Registry Defragger is very good (and free)
Again, watch for the tag along Ask Toolbar during installation). I download
it and their file defragger which is very quick (and free) and run it and
then the registry defragger to optimize HD access speeds. When done I
uninstall both because I schedule Windows defragger to do it from then on.

Best of luck,
John B.

Dear List:

I had an occasion to scan my registry for something and I see a whole lot of
keys with a .com extension - tried a few in the browser and they don't link
to anything. A couple of them are identified as attack sites.

What's the best way to get rid of the junk - dangerous or otherwise?

MTIA

Rocky
