Good catch Andy Max -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Andy Lacey Sent: 15 June 2009 17:58 To: 'Discussion of Hardware and Software issues' Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] XP registry repair - SOLVED For the sake of the archives. It was permissions in the registry which had somehow got messed up. This link tells you how to rest those back to defaults, which worked fine. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222 Cheers Andy -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Rocky Smolin Sent: 15 June 2009 17:07 To: 'Discussion of Hardware and Software issues' Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] XP registry repair Well, as long as you have the Drive Image you can't do too much damage, right? I mean you can always rewind to the current (broken) state, yes? I've had too many occasions when XP sees a restore point but then won't restore from it. So I'm doing an image backup with DriveImage. I fear this could go horribly wrong. But hey what's the worst that can happen? No, don't answer that. -- Andy Lacey http://www.minstersystems.co.uk --------- Original Message -------- From: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> To: "'Discussion of Hardware and Software issues'" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] XP registry repair Date: 15/06/09 14:43 Do you have restore points? As I say the pc's working fine so I suppose the registry can't be that hosed. But I can't reliably register or unregister anything. Logged on as user 1 I can reg certain DLL's but not others. Logged on as user 2 I can reg the ones user 1 can't but can't reg the ones that user 1 can. !!!!!!!! Tried creating a new user but that doesn't help me - fails the first register I tried. I don't know what to make of it. It smacks to me of a security issue, although then I'd have expected the error to say "You don't have rights to do this" or somesuch. Mmm, looks like my security thing may be right. I've just gone into the registry and indeed the keys are showing with different permissions. For some User 1 has Full Control and user 2's not mentioned. For others vice-versa. Just googled this and http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/reset-the-registry-and-the-file-permission s-in-windows-xp/ recommens using SecEdit to reset reg permissions. Very nervous. Anyone any experience here? -- Andy Lacey http://www.minstersystems.co.uk --------- Original Message -------- From: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> To: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] XP registry repair Date: 15/06/09 13:56 Ccleaner is pretty good at cleaning them up, but I don't know about repairing registries... I've a machine here that's playing odd. Just trying to upgrade an existing accounts system, which goes fine on all other pc's but on this one it crashes when trying to register certain DLL's and OCX's. And you get a different set of failed files depending which user you're logged on as. There's a variety of messages from "Unspecified error" to "An event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers" via "Exception occurred". Pc runs ok otherwise just can't register anything reliably. Thought a reg repairer might help. Any ideas? -- Andy Lacey http://www.minstersystems.co.uk ________________________________________________ Message sent using UebiMiau 2.7.2 _______________________________________________ dba-Tech mailing list dba-Tech at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/dba-tech Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com This communication and its attachments, if any, may contain confidential and privileged information the use of which by other persons or entities than the intended recipient is prohibited.
