Hi Tina,

I think Jon explained it pretty well in 2 of his replys, see below. One 
other thing to note is that 5.25 and 2.5 SATA's use the same pin out so 
if you have one of the SATA to USB adapter you can check either. I have 
a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB adapter that also has an IDE port for the5.25 
and another for the 2.5 allowing you to access a drive from any PC with 
a USB 2 connection. I use this all the time for file recovery and even 
scan and remove viruses.

They come in the same flavours as pc hard drives, you've got IDE and SATA.
If it's IDE, it'll have a bunch of about 20 pins in the back, if it's sata,
it'll have two plastic slots at the back.

Yeah, it can't hurt to do that. Although when you've got it out, it's so
obviously one or the other, you should be ok. With IDE there are metal pins
visible, with SATA there aren't.
