Susan, 

I do have a DSL Modem which incorporates a hardware firewall, but
BitDefender on my PC still blocks a Trojan or Virus every few weeks.

Yes. Pretty much anyway. Does it have file shares to any other system
on your network? The router will protect you pretty well from
outsiders trying to get at your systems.
