If you install Server2008 you get Hyper-V (No other virtualization product has a smaller foot-print as the OS is specially designed for this purpose) and it is a simple process to install Windows7 or Vista on the system. The only issue, of course is the amount of memory and type of computer. I would strong recommend a quad (64 bit) with 8 GB of RAM and of course a couple 500 GB SATA drives would be excellent. This whole package can now be had for less than $1000. The beauty is that a system like that can have one main system. WindowsServer2008 is an excellent base. From there you can just run any OS and each will appear on the network as a separate PC. I have set my system up to run with 5 virtual PCs. Windows7 64bit, Windows7 32bit, Oracle/Unbreakable Linux, Vista Business Premium, Server2003 and I will probably be running more like a XP, Ubuntu 9, Debian Server... The impact to the overall performance, so far, is minimal... All these individual Virtualizations can be separately tricked up, turned off and even removed... very flexible. I even have the Server2003 running MS SQL and it fully accessible anywhere on the network... if the port was not blocked it could run externally. One of the issues with Server2008 is that there are still limited 64 bit drivers and some of the low end printers are just not compatible. By sharing the printers through a virtual OS that problem can be resolved. You can also remotely login to each OS as if it is a separate PC... I do this by installing Hamachi, LogMeIn or UltraVNC on each system. The biggest issue is that a lot of eggs are in one basket. That is why two separate drives are necessary, each with a complete current image on it. Can I install it side by side with Vista or does it replace Vista?
