Google could have done that but then there would be an implied responsiblity
to support the API and then it is much more difficult to just bail when they
wanted and just did.

So - who wants to buy it from Google and charge for the service?  The
charges would probably be small, and it could be profitable.  If it's this
popular, then I bet someone will.

Google is shutting down its Translation API:

The announcement has sent a huge flurry of anger amount the world wide
development community. Millions of web applications have learned to depend
on this translator which has made many sites world wide in their scope and
capability.

As of next November it will be no more.
