If you are interested in the technological underpinnings of the bitcoin phenomena, you should check out the SecurityNow podcast on it.

Personally, I think it's just an experimental currency... A blueprint for what might eventually happen in the future. But I highly doubt we will ever have a single currency that isn't controlled by any government, nor do I think it's a good idea.
