Hi Arthur: Congratulations...now that made your morning. By the way I did not know you could have both MS SQL and MS SQL Express running on the same computer. Don't they default to ports 1433 and 1434? But before I get to that, I want to share a discovery that was new to me. To uninstall any program, find its tile in the Modern (i.e. Metro) UI and right-click and choose Uninstall. After that, everything looks familiar. Anyway, I decided to uninstall SQL 2012 Express and all its components. That did the trick. Don't know which component it was; it may be significant that SQL 2012 was running as a service. When I reinstall it, I'll learn what ports it claims. I am once again a happy camper!
