Hi Hans: I agree. To be able to work with a language takes a couple of months, tops, but the code and understanding is really not there, yet. If you work in a language steady, for year, a person can get really good. To be a guru in a language takes years and by then you can stretch the language far beyond its original design. Learning a new language is always a tough climb...it is not so much actual language but the language concept that the creator intended, that is the challenge to comprehend. That is, IMHO, why there is so few real quality programmers. It take years to become really good. The other unfortunate reality is that non-programmers have no idea what it takes to make good solid code so they just tend to look for the hacker that can crank out features and lines of code...but they tend to be the people that pay the bills. When I was in the position of choosing developers, I tended to gravitate towards the people that really loved programming. The people that are really interested in whole world of computing are the innovators, creators and the real project designers. Additionally, if the programmer has finished a few projects then they are keepers...IMHO.
