Uhm, auto-archiving is an _option_. One that I don't use. I have 6.75 GB in Outlook, from the last 13 years right now and have no problems. The #1 reason MS is going to online apps is because the revenue will eventually be higher. -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Jim Lawrence Sent: Friday, November 01, 2013 11:15 AM To: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] Outlook too Small? (was:The walking dead) Hi Dan: The old desktop version...I have not tried the new web based Outlook yet. The desktop version because of its size limits, is continually pruning off older posts and archiving them. Over the years, I have directories to hundreds of companies for which I had correspondence but Outlook just keeps archiving the directory contents to yet another PST file as the file limit gets surpassed. Trying to find some old mail can be a real pain....I had about twenty archives attached and it was all getting a little kludgey. I put up with it for as long as I could and finally gave up on it. There is so much email these days that desktop Outlook is ready for retirement, it would seem that Microsoft and yourself agrees. (was:The walking dead) Hi Jim, Do you mean desktop Outlook or Outlook.com? I was just about to set up and Outlook.com account for my W8 phone so that I could synchronize with Outlook on my PC. But what does 'too small' mean? Thanks! Most of my mail now goes through GMail and my local ISP's Zimbra (I really like Zimbra...a lot better internet email service than GMail in my opinion). I actually like Outlook but the product is too small for today's volumes of mail messages...two to four GBs just doesn't cut it (and it is too easy to hack) and I am not going to install an Exchange server just to support it.
