Thanks, Jim. Most often when I'm at my computer I'm running Ubuntu as a VirtualBox VM and Win 8.1 as the main system, so I take either suggested path. I think that I'll try both and see which I prefer. I shall also have a look at your link to the Base Handbook. As it happens, I'm doing an app on a volunteer basis, and at the same time trying to convert the non-profit client from WinXP to Linux, and so far the missing piece has been a replacement for Access. I'll have a look at your link and see if it's up to scratch (I've written a couple of apps for the organazation, for free, and used Access RunTime to deploy them. In Access I seldom if ever use macros but maybe I can get past that, and port/deploy them to Base instead. That would be truly ideal. IMO, the less a non-profit depends on MS, the better off they'll be.
