You can tell Reader to not do updates......select Do Not download or install updates automatically in Edit/Preferences/Updater Not sure if it still prompts you about them. My systems all seem to default to this Automatically download updates, but let me choose when to install them The bigger issue is with Adobe Flash Player I think as there have been several exploits of that. As long as you never go to websites you are probably OK without that. Ha ha.
