I've used that before - to get the character I held down the Alt key while
typing the three digit decimal code

Jon,

I get the same thing here, but hey, now I know how to get the Euro sign,
which was half my question. I tried it in Word and got the Euro sign.
However, here in Gmail I get nothing at all, with or without the Shift key
added. In Word, adding the Shift key gives me nothing at all.
