I did that same thing w/W8 - put the desktop tile upper left. So I was always running W8 in W7 look alike mode. Just to make sure this is so, the first thing I did was drag the Desktop tile to the upper left in the first tile group, so it's right there in case I accidentally end up back in the tiles, so I can switch back with one click. On my laptop I have a 22" external monitor attached, and the pair of screens work in stretch mode. This is terrific. At the moment, I'm working on my forthcoming book. I also have an Access app open. On the other monitor I have a PDF open, as well as FireFox. Finally, I have a free utility installed (whose name eludes me at the moment), that returns the Start button to a more WIndows-7 style, but goes considerably further than that, particularly in its presentation of the Control Panel. In short, my Windows 8.1 looks and acts a lot more like Windows 7 than 8.1. I guess you could say that I completely ignore the tiled interface, but that's ok by me. I still get the under-the-covers advantages of 8.1, such as much quicker bootup times and better stability. Mind you, just about the only time I reboot is after an update or installation that demands it. All in all, I'm quite happy to run Windows 8.1, since it now behaves exactly the way I want. I'll have a look around later this evening, and see if I can discover the name of the start button replacement. I highly recommend it. There are several such replacements, one of which can be found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/start_menu_8.html.
