Hi Gustav: Would you have a script that I could take a look at? If you don't think that is a good idea, fine but if its OK, sent it either online or offline. :-) Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gustav Brock" <gustav at cactus.dk> To: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> Sent: Friday, October 17, 2014 3:01:02 PM Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] Windows Update Hi Jim I've never heard of such issues. On the other hand, I do all testing connecting to our AD; then DNS etc. are assigned by the login script, so it always works. I never touch the hostfile. /gustav ________________________________________ Fra: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com <dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com> på vegne af Jim Lawrence <accessd at shaw.ca> Sendt: 17. oktober 2014 23:27 Til: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Emne: Re: [dba-Tech] Windows Update Hi Gustav: The main issue appears to be that a user can access a network address once but not again. This has happened, on other systems, when a crash scenario takes place and a hidden temporary credential file is left open and it has to be removed before a new successful connection, of the same address, can take place...this luckily is very rare. I have been looking for this/these file(s) but have not yet found it/them, on Windows10. Unfortunately, there can be no networking until they are found and deleted. I have been adding the network addresses directly into the system's host file and now some of the reluctant desktop and server connections are appearing. There of course should be a better way through "PC settings" but I have not yet discovered it. Question: How can either a DNS or new workgroup (workplace) be added? My Win10 finds at once a dozen or so servers and workstations from both sites of our domain. Printers, however, seem limited (with a domain user account login) to the local site only, which is OK. All our printers are attached to printer servers. If I use a domain admin account and go to Control Panel, Printers and search for printers in the cataloque, all printers are listed at once. What you see, reminds me of the days of Windows for Workgroups where servers/PCs could come and go. /gustav ________________________________________ Fra: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com <dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com> på vegne af Jim Lawrence <accessd at shaw.ca> Sendt: 15. oktober 2014 19:51 Til: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Emne: Re: [dba-Tech] Windows Update Hi Gustav: You are just the man to answer some of my Windows10 (Win8.x) questions. I was playing with Win10 yesterday and it was not working as I would think it should: 1. It couldn't find most of the computers on the network. It did find a few but I have no idea of the criteria used. It didn't even find the server with the AD. It did find a Linux computer but not all of them. Maybe it is because that I have been unable to find where I should change DNS settings and be able to set the appropriate credentials? An XP laptop was ignored, a Win7 station and laptop was ignored and even two Window enterprise server 2008 were lost...not to mention, two other Linux boxes were avoid; server and station. 2. Sometimes, the list of computers that the system did show would allow displaying on the shares, sometimes not. 3. Attaching the printers was a dismal. It would not display any network printers, would not accept direct IP addresses and/or names and had so few printer options as to make setting up printers, even if they could be attached as not possible. The final insult was when the printer services froze and had to be unlocked via the taskmanager. I know this package is just a beta so some slack should be given but I should not be having so many issues, when just establishing the basics. In comparison, the last Linux station I installed, found all the computers, shares, printers, networks (DNS or Workgroups...network or wi-fi), found the active directory and was even immediately listed on the router. It suggested the appropriate printer drivers for both the network and even the shared pass-through printers that were hung off other stations. The functionality is not obvious or automatic. If I am having these problems I can not imagine what a user in a small office would feel like. On the upside, the Win10 is a lot prettier (the taskmanager is really nicely laid out) and getting at its features are a lot easier...the GUI looks really nice....could be a winner. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
