Hi Jim

Well, I don't blame them. It's a free service and you are absolutely free to use it or not, and it goes along their other free services. As often stated, you pay with your data, you’re your money.

Another free service with probably much less side effects is OpenDNS by Cisco:

Hi Gustav:

Thanks for the information. Never heard the downside of this DNS setting...not very sporting of Google is it.

Hi Jim

These have been known for years and I used them a lot - at least they are nearly impossible to forget.
I stopped, however, to use them permanently when I realized that this free service has a flip side and that is, that it allows Google to track all external activity of your organization - and they do it.

Very scary.

So I use them for debugging only where they are an excellent tool.

Also, they set a defacto standard for naming in-house DNS servers, n.n.n.4 and n.n.n.8, which I have followed.

If you are not hosting your own DNS server, do not want to be stuck using the ISPs address, planning to move you or your client to another ISP or just want to standardize all your supported networks, you can use the free Google DNS support for Developers. Following this step also leaves less of a foot print on the web as well.

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using?hl=en

Note: If the site does not have either a server or good router there is no fall-over address management so in the event that Google goes off line or as they tend to do, drop a service from time to time, keep a copy of the previous DNS addresses.
