[dba-Tech] SpinRite or? Finished!

Browser issues aside, I have found Tom's Hardware to be a rather frustrating
site. In its beginning it was a wonderfully technical site but the
advertising is so pervasive and the cross links between threads are
frustrating as they end up as dead ends at times.

Hmm. On my Windows 10 box it looks fine in Edge, Chrome and Firefox. IE for
some reason has a hard time displaying it at all. Finally did display it
after several attempts though IE says that the site is not responding.

However, on a Windows 7 VM IE displays it fine.

Curious.

Hi Lambert

I'll make a note of this. Thanks.

But - am I the only one that have found links to Tom's Hardware nearly
impossible to read?
With Edge, the link here is a total mess.
With IE and AdBlocker Plus it is so and so - it looks like something from
the 90s.

This site
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/272053-32-disk-sectors-incredibly-slow-bac
k-process
has the comment:

Data recovery professionals will tell you that HDD Regenerator and Spinrite
are potential drive killers. Your drive appears to have bad media or weak
heads. SpinRite will hammer away at a bad sector up to several thousand
times, while hoping for 1 good read. This methodology can accelerate the
total failure of your drive.

Your best DIY approach would be to clone your drive sector-by-sector using a
tool that knows how to work around bad sectors, and then use data recovery
software on the clone.

Some freeware cloning tools are ...

dd_rescue: http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/
ddrescue: http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html

Comparison between ddrescue and dd_rescue:
http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/Ddrescue

Ddrescue can perform multipass cloning. It clones the easy sectors on the
first pass, and attempts the more difficult ones on subsequent passes. It
can also clone your drive in reverse, thereby disabling lookahead caching.
It keeps a log, allowing it to resume after an interruption.

The following thread discusses various freeware and commercial cloning
tools:

Hi all

Sadly, after three hours this tool reported "Too many bad sectors" and
refused to proceed.
That's probably not the truth but the result of a time-out due to this
drive's extremely slow response.

Seems like I'm left with a goodie for the recycle bin ...

Hi Gary and John

It's a WD drive and I have located the "Western Digital Data LifeGuard
Diagnostics - WinDlg (DLGDIAG for Windows)".

Will try tomorrow if it can do anything.
