What version of Windows 7 do you have?
According to what I have read as I never ran into such a problem and I have connected dozens (hundreds) or various Windows versions; the key issue that many over-look is: make sure the home group listener and home group provider are not disabled in admin tools services.
You can also try setting your home-group to a different name that the default like: i.e Arthur.

Thanks, Lambert. Unfortunately, now I have a deeper puzzle. I tried to join
the homegroup (which was created on my desktop) from my laptop; pasted in
the password, and received the message "Windows can't set up a homegroup on
this computer." I ran the homegroup troubleshooter, which was no help at
all.
The peculiar (well, to me, at least) is that when I run Windows Explorer,
and click Network, I can see the other computer, but I can't access it. I
am asked for a name and password. These are the same on both computers.
Some months back I had this working. But then I had to replace the hard
disk in my laptop and since then, I can't make it work correctly.
