What worked for me on a win10 laptop with 8GB RAM: VMWare Workstation 
Player 12.5, then created a VM for Linux Mint 18. Give it 4GB of memory 
and at least 50GB of disk space. Both are free, the combo works like a 
charm, easily shares folders with the host.
