[dba-Tech] This is bad

Hi John

Yes, this is very good if you have users that do a lot of browsing for research or similar. We use:

https://heimdalsecurity.com/enterprise-security/products/threat-prevention

It is not free but cheap, and Heimdal also has products for home use. Those products typically work by adjusting the local DNS settings of Windows, while the product above is applied be adjusting the DNS of the router, thus nothing to install and zero maintenance.

If your or your client’s budget is tiny, this is the single product (or similar) to pick; forget about additional antivirus or antimalware.

Another, more robust, thing you can do is use a DNS filtering service. There are a few good ones available. I do not know which ones are available to consumers as I use a business solution for my clients but these are proactive services that block sites via ip address rather than by broad categories. They seek out problem sites, including inserted redirection ads like this and block them. They can also be used to prevent broader categories such as porn, social media, misinformation, etc.
www.dnsfilter.com<http://www.dnsfilter.com> is a good one.
There are free options for services like this but similar to most free AV, VPN, etc. they're generally harvesting all of your traffic and info for their use.

Hi Jon

Indeed. This is (should be) a mandatory extension (for Edge also) in any Windows install:

Imprint (adblockplus.org)<https://adblockplus.org/imprint>

We have used it for years with zero issues. It is beyond me why people accept the slow-loading add-bloated sites, when this free tool removes all the crap and boosts load time – at zero cost or what you may decide to donate.

Happy New Year!
Gustav

This is one of the reasons that I install adblock on every computer I own... Well, that and getting rid of advertising 😊
