Just to add to the mix, I highly recommend Remote Administrator (famatech.com). It does use the API's for screen refreshes (when possible). It's cheap, extremely lightweight (when you get the refreshes down to 10 per second...it defaults to 100, which will bog a slower machine down a bit). It has file transfer and remote shutdown capabilities too. (And 'telnet', but I think it only works for 9x machines (the telnet part).). Also, just to point out why you would want a remote 'screen' shot, versus a VPN connection. If you are dealing with small files, such as a VB project, where your source files are mostly text, and thus relatively small (a few kilobytes at most), then a VPN connection will work fine, even over a modem. However, the larger the files, the more bandwidth you need to keep up. For example, a 10 meg file will take 30 to 40 minutes on most modem's. Over a fast cable or DSL line, 10 megs will take less then a minute. However, even over really fast broad band connections, a 200 meg file would take forever to transfer across. However, if you have a Terminal Server, or remote screen program, you aren't transfering the file, just screen images, so as long as your bandwidth handles that requirement (Remote Admin works pretty well over a moderate modem connection too), then it doesn't matter how big the files are that you are working on. I have a workstation here (ME) which I've been meaning to upgrade to 2k, just because I'm tiered of rebooting every 2 weeks. VPN connectivity provides simply a network connection into a VPN server. By logging on to the VPN it makes it as if you were on the network at work, not exactly your PC. You'd probably be able to network over to your PC (if it was left on). Remote Access to the PC as in Remote Control can be granted via a VPN connection using something like Terminal Services, but in reality your Terminal Service Connection is handled by your VPN server to your computer, thus the connection is not strictly from the Internet to your work PC but rather the internet to the server, that remote controls your PC. Another way to set up remote control access to your PC at work/home is to use a software such as VNC there are different flavors such as VNC, TightVNC, esVNC (my favorite and includes FTP capabilities), RealVNC and in development UltraVNC. Of all of them, the latter is the one that holds the most promise as they are working on using plugins that tap into API's that can use the hardware drivers form your video cards that can greatly improve screen refreshes. It still supports FTP capabilities. Of all the Remote control software out there (PcAnywhere, VNC, TS, etc..), GotoMyPC is one of the easiest to set up, administer, but is also not cheap, I forget what the monthly and yearly subscription cost are, but I guarantee that if you load it to you work pc, firewall or not, you WILL be able to connect directly to your PC using a secure connection.
