Coincidentally one my 'finders' contacted me today and suggested this:
10% commission on work up to $1000, (eg. maintenance jobs, initial client meetings etc.)
5% on work over $1000
Nothing payable after 2 years.
At least this gives the agreement an end date.

I am currently paying 10% commission in finders fees. I personally think 15% sounds high. I do find it easier never to change my hourly rate - whatever it is, stick to it and make the commission come off that.
Initially I had a rate for my *own* clients and a slightly higher one for referred clients (where finder fees were payable), but it was too complicated, and a bit unethical (IMO).
It is tricky though. Does the commission ever stop? Maybe it should at some point...

Steve,
I did this once quite a few years ago. A local staffing company called to
see if I would do Access training. I gave them 15% off my rate and they
charged the client full price. It worked out well. However I never did do
another contract with them, as whenever they called, I was always booked up,
so I really don't if the trend would have continued.
Just make sure the firm is reputable and has a few years under it's belt.
A quick check of the BBB web site should also be on the to do list. If
possible, talk to other consultants that have worked with them.

Dear Group,
Do any of you independent developers give finders' fees or have marketing
arrangements with other firms to gain more clients? I ask because my wife,
Janet, and I are meeting with the owner of an employee staffing company on
Thursday to talk about it. We're going to offer to give 15% of our
development fees up to $10,000 and 10% over $10,000 for any new business we
get from riding on the staffing company's coat tails.
We've been struggling for almost 9 months and we could use a boost from an
established firm's customer list.
