mmmm I always interpreted those "codes" as identifying the spam run, so spammers could work out which were more successful. That would not be so silly to me.....or lazy... I've tended to think of it as unethical, but then I still get lots of promotional material in my physical letterbox also.... Certainly it is seen as unwelcome by most people.
