I was able to get it to work finally!!!

Surprisingly, the answer was this:
It works fine as long as the "search" button is a button control.  If the
"search" button is a label control it will work the first time and not
again.

I prefer the label control with the code in the on-click event of it because
I can format it and make it match the application.  Command buttons are
boring gray objects.

Guess I learned that I can't beat the system every time!!!
