The truth is, you don't really ask for anything -- all publishers have different requirements, and you either play ball, or you don't get published. Since this is from a blog, you probably won't have much to worry about -- it's already been published, so they probably won't try to buy all rights -- you should be able to republish anyplace you like -- you'll just have to ask them about that to make sure you don't violate anything. They may want to publish it for free -- that's not uncommon with already published material. If that's the case, all you really get out of it is some fame. :) If they send you a contract and you don't understand the rights clauses, just ask them. They'll either buy it outright and require that you take it off your blog and never use it again or they'll buy first publishing rights, which means you can reprint it but you have to say, "published first by ....," some buy all rights for a year and then it reverts back to you to republish, resell... -- there are a few different ways they could go. Susan H. Well, they just asked if they could publish it. They didn't address anything about rights or compensation. I suppose I could write back and ask what terms they're proposing.... -C- ---------------------------------------- From: "Rocky Smolin - Beach Access Software" <bchacc at san.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2005 11:23 AM To: "Access Developers discussion and problem solving" <accessd at databaseadvisors.com> Subject: SPAM-LOW: Re: [AccessD] Getting published... Are they offering payment? If they are you could go to their website and see if they say what they pay authors. You could look in Writer's Market as well. They'll probably give you a boilerplate contract. They'll probably get first North American rights. Generally, you keep the copyright. Susan could probably tell you a lot more about this. HEY, SUSAN!! Rocky ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christopher Hawkins" To: Sent: Thursday, June 30, 2005 9:37 AM Subject: [AccessD] Getting published... SD Magazine eMailed me this morning to tell me they want to publish one of my blog pieces. I know some of you have been published, so before I respond to them I want to talk with you. What should I ask for? I don't want to get taken advantage of. -C- -- AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com -- AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com -- AccessD mailing list AccessD at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/accessd Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com
