The article pointed out by Susan looks very interesting.  I intend to 
read it properly later. :-)

As regards ACE, in a nutshell it is the JET database engine, now owned 
exclusively by Access, and enhanced to support the new Access 2007 
features, e.g. new data types, SharePoint integration, etc.
