Give your machiine plenty of RAM, you can always reduce it later. Create a dynamically expanding boot disk and set it's size bigger that you think will need. (I generally set mine to 30GB - you can always add additional disks later) Be sure to install the "guest additions" Play around with the CD/DVD, USB, Network settings etc to get familiar with them.
