I need cheap copies of windows for VMs. I found a NewEgg special Windows Home Server 2011 X64 for $29.99 the other day and snapped up 4 copies, not knowing whether they would even work in a VM. Well... it does, with caveats. 1) They force a minimum disk size of 160 gigs at install. I don't need that much, 60 has always been fine for my purposes. 2) computer name "stuff" is locked down. You can't change the workgroup through the interface, though apparently you can through scripting. No idea what else I may run into before I am done, however WHS 2011 is (apparently) Windows 2008 R2 rebadged and crippled some how. All I need is to set up my 3rd party address validation software and get my C# program talking to these VMs. $29.99 for Windows is pretty cheap. Plus there is a ton of discussion about getting this, that and t'other working on WHS 2011. We shall see. -- John W.
