Does spreadsheet data ever "degrade"? I suspect it does, and that auto
recover can adversely affect things after Excel crashes.

I would not use spreadsheets to house data, only logic and manipulation
techniques.

And I would audit the functionality regularly.

Many users are not taught what can go wrong with them. It is not always
user error, but ignorance.
