There is another variable, which is the implementation of the usb and firewire in the computer. The box I bought is just called Mobile Disk External Data Storage and came from CompUSA. Price about $59 IIRC. John W. HDD enclosures vary by brand, mostly due to the onboard hdd controller on the enclosure, I'm curious as to which one you bought, I'm surprised to hear that you got such a huge gap in performance between both connection.
