I think you may be right ;-))) The lady who is trying to get me involved thinks she can program. We've fixed her messes before ;-/ I'll see what goes down at this meeting, she did mention that they thought they could run the app from a single db but I can't see how... It all might fall in a heap anyhow. <rant> I've got an even worse client... I quoted 40K for a job, they turn around and ask me to requote but this time they through in a minimum performance criteria of 3 secs... Only problem is the hardware they have is not too crash hot :-( An old server (dual P? 500's, 512 mb) running SQL 2K AND IIS, the task mgr shows the cpu's running 50 -60% ALL the time!!! The proposed app uses SQL and IIS and also has to query a couple of Oracle db's on the fly... To top it all off the last leg of the network has to be done over a wireless connection, using hardware they havn't even bought yet!!! This is a multinational company!!! Do they think I'm stupid? Sometimes I think I should just go work for someone else... </rant> cheers Michael M My vote would be to run like hell. Any client that hires you and TELLS you what they are going to do probably has a "stock room" guru telling them how to run things, or possibly even doing the stuff. John W. They initially consulted me to ask what was involved in doing the installs remotely... At that stage they said to me they were going to install SQL in all 28 sites. I asked for clarification thinking they surely only needed MSDE at each site otherwise the cost would have been enormous (I know these people don't have that sort of money). Anyway, I've just had a look at the db (installed @ my office) and application (you can tell its been upsized from Access, all those varchar(255) fields). They now want me to advise them on replicating the 28 db's back to their central server! I've had a look at the schema and there is no native way to split the data by site. Do I 1. Run like hell ;-) 2. Replicate back to 28 db's 3. Build a master db that can tell 1 site from another 4. Run the apps client/server Can I 1. Append a site field to the replicated data? 2. Replicate the 28 --> 28 --> 1 (master) I'm going to a meeting tomorrow and just wanted to see if I had missed any obvious options. cheers Michael M _______________________________________________ dba-SQLServer mailing list dba-SQLServer at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/dba-sqlserver http://www.databaseadvisors.com _______________________________________________ dba-SQLServer mailing list dba-SQLServer at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/dba-sqlserver http://www.databaseadvisors.com --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
