Well, you win the WAG award! I found something somewhere that says to prevent hanging, shut down all application services before shutting down the server. I will give that a try and see what happens. What I was trying to suggest is that (probably correctly for a server) the OS will not shut down if the SQL Server is still running and (possibly) serving data. I think you need to stop the SQL Server before you shut down the OS. I'm not a server guy, and it is Sunday morning in England but that's what I'd look at in your situation. Regards!
