Sharepoint is more than a glorified document warehouse. It is more than a web-based document storage system. Collaboration, Portal Technology, Content Management, Searching and Indexing, Business Process Management and Business Intelligences are the main "pillars" of Sharepoint. It comes free as part of the Windows 2003 OS as Windows Sharepoint Services ver 3.0 (for MOSS2007) and if you need portal technology, advanced indexing and searching and connectivity to external datasources you will need to get the full MOSS 2007. Everything in Sharepoint is a list and is directly managed behind-the-scenes by SQL server 2005 (for MOSS2007). M$ has tightly integrated it with their Office 2007 product and is also integrating it into their newer products with the Windows Workflow Foundation and Windows Presentation Foundation. And the interface *is* web-based. -----Original Message----- From: dba-sqlserver-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-sqlserver-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Steve Zayko Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2007 9:25 AM To: dba-sqlserver at databaseadvisors.com Subject: Re: [dba-SQLServer] OT SharePoint We use Sharepoint internally at SECOR. It is good for a web-based document storage system. It helps with versioning because users may "check out" a document, make edits, and check it back in with changes saved. While it is checked out, no other users may view the document. It has some flexibility to make the interface look like web pages, but it is essentially a glorified document warehouse. -Z Stephen R. I will ask a simple question... What is the primary reason for SharePoint? What is it used for? Why would someone use it as opposed to just creating a web page? (No I am not writing an article on it just trying to figure out whether it is worth installing.)
