[dba-Tech] Corrupted Word file

With the exception of the two Belkins for servers, I've always used APC or Tripp-Lite for pc's. Both brands have always lasted more than 2 years for me (Usually 3-5 years). You might check to see if it's just the battery that needs replaced in yours (although that might cost close to the price of a new ups).

I had a small APC ups that I got for under $30 (£15 at the time),
reduced from $90. It's lasted for nearly two years, but gave up the ghost
the other night. Sometimes it would randomly turn off, sometimes it
would start beeping as if there was a problem, and the only way to stop it
was to turn everything plugged into it off, turn the power off at the
mains, and restart the UPS, which was somewhat annoying, especially that
time it did it at 4am...

On Monday night however, it jsut turned off and wouldn't come back on
again. I'm going to go and buy another one, but I don't really want to
spend a massive amount of money on it if it's going to die in another 2
 years...

Any suggestions?

Jon

I like the Belkin UPSs too. Also the CyberPower brand.

I have an APC RS 1500 with an extra battery pack which runs my office.
Everything is plugged into it. Sometimes that means 6 PCs, a server and
 a
whole slew of peripherals. Kind of pushing it at that point but that's
 why I
paid the big money ;o) The normal 2 machines will run quite awhile it
 the
power goes out and if that's too long it shuts them down very
 gracefully
before cutting them off.

...and, so that we don't scare Susan off, you can get a less expensive
 UPS
from Staples for under $50 that will work fine for a PC. And if she
 would
get herself a laptop it wouldn't matter at all ;o)

Just to add to the UPS discussion. I've come across the Belkin UPS's
 at
Buy.com (search for Belkin UPS at buy.com's website). I just paid $145
 for
a 1500va UPS. This is the second one I've purchased and both have been
 for
small business servers. The first one I setup has been put to good use
several times in the last year as the power where it is installed is
 down
quite a bit. From the reviews I've read about them, the length of time
 they
will provide power at full load is exaggerated but for the price they
 can
protect a good amount of equipment long enough to shut it down
 gracefully.
It even comes with a serial and usb cable to connect to your computer
 and a
$30 mail-in rebate.
