We only have single phase cabling in homes in the UK. Some businesses have up to three phases with different amp ratings on the fuses. Homes tend to be limited to 13 amps (I think, I'm NOT an electrician!), whereas I know at work we have three phases of 415 amps. I was told by the electrician installing a second phase in my server room not to mix the phases across equipment though, as, much like in Ghostbusters, you shouldn't cross the streams. It would be bad. He said something about the "potential" and the risk of BIG shocks from bridging two phases, so this worries me slightly. Not being an expert and all :-) Jon -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Helmut Kotsch Sent: 15 April 2008 15:40 To: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] modem/router We have normally three-phase AC current in our houses. The "wiring" networks will work best if they are all connected to the same phase. They also work across phases since somewhere in your house the three phases end up in a single cable where some coupling takes place. However the performance goes down. To overcome this problem there are devices available called "phase-couplers" which couple the high frequency data to the other phases. One additional thing to consider is that the network plug should be plugged directly into the wall plug without using any extension cord because the extension cords using twisted flexible wires are not good in transporting high frequencies. You loose signal strength. These "wiring" networks work just fine for all sockets on the "same side" of the circuit but completely fail for all sockets on the "opposite side" of the circuit. IOW the voltage brought into your house has TWO 120 volt "sides". In my case one half (roughly) of my house runs on one side, the other 1/2 runs on the other side. I assume that is to "balance" the load on the lines coming in though it may simply be chance. Not sure but I know that this house will not support a "wiring" network, or more literally, you will get signal to 1/2 of the house. I have heard that there is a widget that can be placed across the two "sides" to cause the signal to route over to the other side.
