As the speed of the web keeps increasing the picture size keeps increasing. It is not whether a picture is 24 bit but the actaul size of the picture (in kilobytes) and the dpi of the picture. A rule of thumb I use for use for medium sized pictures is 50k and all pictures do not exceed 72 dpi.
