Are these types of seizures standard practice now?

I've just listened to a story on CBC Radio about the US border guards
seizing laptops, iPods and Blackberrys from CDN visitors to the USA, then
downloading their entire contents. In one case, the laptop was passworded;
the owner refused to divulge the password; he was jailed and brought before
a grand jury, which ordered him to divulge the password or remain in jail
until he did. After a week, a judge overturned the order. A lawyer from a
CDN firm said that his firm's policy is now that all its lawyers cross the
border with empty Blackberrys and laptops. The laptops contain only the OS
and a browser so the lawyers can get to their web site.

The EFF is fighting these rulings, but that could take a while.
