Hi Peter: Sorry about delay but I have been on a tight schedule. If you have not already resolved your problem I would suggest you check out the following link: https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/samba-fileserver.html HTH Jim -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Peter Brawley Sent: Sunday, August 23, 2009 10:54 AM To: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] lan node name Jim, Adding samba to the Ubuntu server made no difference. The solution that worked for me was to add the IP address and its name to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS in every Windows workstation. Ugh. What is strange is that no other LAN machine is listed in those HOSTS files, yet they all find those unlisted nodes by name. Anybody understand that? Here's a home network with six nodes, four running Win, one running > Ubuntu desktop, and now a new one running Ubuntu server.
