Hi Jim Very useful info, thanks. I'll pass it on to my colleague testing this out. And right, the native Desktop Support is slow ... /gustav >>> accessd at shaw.ca 28-05-2009 20:58 >>> The only way I have found around that, as previously mentioned is Windows built-in termserver along with Hamachi connected with Remote Desktop Connection... not to be confused with the host built-in Desktop support which is ssssllllooooowwwww. The only issues are that you will have to first set things up on the clients computers as it is unlikely that you will be able to talk the average computer use through the installation process, a site visit is mandatory. Hamachi uses ports 12975 and 32976. The maximum number of users for a network is limited by 16 for free (you can buy unlimited) but you can create an unlimited number of networks. The IP addresses used by Hamachi are not unblockable but it is just that many firewalls do not block their IP range. If so you will have to exclude network addresses range 5.0.0.0 and associated mask 255.0.0.0. In the event of a super tight router and unresponsive local AR IT there is no way through regardless... Maybe you can convince the locals that Hamachi's 4096 bit encryption, considering that 256 bit encryption has never been broken, on the VPN, is secure enough. ;-) Jim -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Gustav Brock Sent: Thursday, May 28, 2009 9:06 AM To: dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] Free alternative for LogMeIn Rescue? Hi Jim We use various versions of VNC too and, of course, Remote Desktop. Problem is, however, that some clients sit behind locked down firewalls where it is impossible to have "special" ports opened or install of the LogMeIn Remote client is not allowed or just not practical. LogMeIn Rescue is different but quite expensive. /gustav >>> accessd at shaw.ca 28-05-2009 17:54 >>> Hamachi with Window Remote Desktop (You have to have a XP Pro TermServer with packages with like XP home)... which of course now owned by LogMeIn and which now uses Hamachi under-the-firewall technology. I use UltraVNC with a lot of clients as it works well on both Windows and Linux (in conjunction with Putty) and it is free. On the other hand the absolute simplest remote product is LogMeIn. Many companies around here use it as their standard regardless the price. There are also bulk purchase rates for larger support companies. All Windows servers have build-in Remote Desktop (TermServer) administration support and all major Linux products have UltraVNC technology built in. Hi all This product for remote support (the user calls the support) is somewhat expensive for ad hoc use: https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/HelpDesk/Home.aspx?home=2&lang=en Any proven alternatives? Must be able to get through firewalls. /gustav
