Thanks for the link, Gustav. I have read about the new encryption standards set by Windows7 and only recently did a Linux update come out to fix the SMB connection. My greatest fear, in networks, is to ever lose connectivity especially as most of my client work is done remotely. To that end I setup RDP (works on Linux or Windows) to connect to all servers and most stations, also extensively use LogMeIn (Hamachi core), a few miscellaneous extras like UltraVNC (works on Linux or Windows) and NetMeeting (as it is by default on all XP stations) rounds out all the clients. For extra safety I use OpenVPN to encompass my entire network which works with any computer regardless of the OS or regardless of where the computers are situated (it will allow a laptop or a station for that matter, to connect to the network from anywhere in the world as if it was attached by a local network cable) and does it all with complete security (brilliant piece of code and I can not recommend it highly enough). The good thing is that the above protocols have remained static and are not affected by the whims or assertions of our OS designers. Hi John and Tina et al This seems to be have been tracked down to the KB2536276 update. It breaks unencrypted Samba from at least Windows XP. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/w hy-is-update-kb2536276-causing-a-block-in/4b3536b7-b6b4-43fc-a973-c75ea478c7 ca?tm=1308409382437&page=1 Don't know how that explains issues in network without Samba. /gustav >>> john at winhaven.net 17-06-2011 19:36 >>> Hi Gustav, No I haven't (yet). But thanks for the heads up! I'll post back if any of my client's PCs in a similar situation have problems. Hi all Suddenly a WinXP client machine couldn't see a NAS shared by workgroup it has been accessing for years. Other machines - Win7, Win2003, and WinXP - could still see the NAS. I investigated "everything" without finding a clue. Finally I did a system restore to Jun. 14th morning ... and voilá, the network drive was back! Anyone else have seen this? I've searched on Google hi-and-lo without finding anything at all which I find a bit strange. /gustav _______________________________________________ dba-Tech mailing list dba-Tech at databaseadvisors.com http://databaseadvisors.com/mailman/listinfo/dba-tech Website: http://www.databaseadvisors.com
